What is Instructional Technology?

Instructional Technology is a field that focuses on the tools and processes used to enhance student engagement, foster student collaboration, meet the needs of a diverse student body, and aid faculty in ensuring their students are meeting the desired learning outcomes. Instructional designers and instructional technologists work in partnership with instructors, programs, and department leadership to find creative solutions in response to the diverse needs of learners in face-to-face, blended, or online learning environments.

Faculty need to know and understand the tools that are available, why to use them, how they benefit the learning experience and how to integrate them into their courses. Students also need clear instruction on using these tools so they can focus on the learning process without getting bogged down by the technology.

How Can Instructional Technologists Help?

Our Instructional Technologists can help bridge the ‘Digital Divide’ that may hinder the adoption of Instructional Technologies to enhance the learning experience for faculty and students. We can:

  • Provide educational workshops and webinars focused on best practices in utilizing available online technologies.
  • Consult with faculty to solve challenges with enterprise level learning technologies including Canvas and third-party integrations.
  • Develop creative solutions to complex issues in achieving the desired learning outcomes using available Instructional Technologies.
  • Prepare and develop training materials to guide faculty and students on the use of supported technologies.
  • Assist in the development of instructional materials.
  • Assist with developing clear, detailed, and concise instructions for students on how to use the technology in completing an assignment.
